Sable Institute wayfinding painted direct to plaster in a stairwell.

The brief

The institute had grown by acquiring the buildings next to it. Each had its own numbering, its own floor levels and its own idea of where the entrance was.

Front of house staff spent most of their day giving directions. That was the brief, stated plainly by the people doing it.

The move

We stopped naming buildings and started naming routes. Every sign answers one question at one decision point, and the system carries only three levels of information, so nothing on a wall competes with the work on it.

Typography is a single weight at three sizes, in one ink, applied direct to plaster where the building allows it. The identity lives in the same alphabet, so the mark reads as the first sign rather than a badge above them.

Our team answered nine hundred fewer questions a week. We counted.
